Keeping the Faith in California
Here’s a note about some events happening throughout the San Francisco Bay Area (and the rest of California) right before the election. There’s stuff in Utah as well, which we’ll announce a bit later.
At the one year anniversary of the passage of Proposition 8, people of faith throughout the state of California will stand with our friends in Maine and Washington State as they face ballot measures which would strip same-sex couples of relationship protections. Through interfaith prayer, song, and reflection, we are “Keeping the Faith” for equality for all people.

My heart aches for the people of Maine. I have not seen any reports yet on Washington, and am almost afraid to look. That people continue to vote in favor of bigotry disturbs me no end. I guess none of the anti-equality lot have figured out that the *true* “slippery slope” is that there is now precedent for some tyrannical majority to take away rights from any group of which they disapprove — and that some day, that group might include themselves.
Washington = happy news. Maine = not so much.
The Keeping the Faith rallies/vigils were wonderful - thanks to all who organized and participated in them.
It’s wonderful to know that there are members of the Mormon community that believe in marriage equality for all. I am a Samoan-American and know many Polynesians that practice the Mormon faith and was very hurt by the Polynesian Mormons active support for prop 8. However, their actions have reignited the GLBT Polynesians to fight back to let the nation and world know that the Polynesian Mormon community that supports prop 8 are NOT the voice for all Polynesians.
This video was the most beautiful, passionate and moving expression of love I’ve seen yet. Thank you for posting it.
For anyone interested here’s a link to a petition to encourage the Judge who will be presiding over the Prop 8 trial beginning on Jan 11, to televise it live. We need this process to be completely transparent so please go to the site and sign the petition. All signatures must be in by Friday morning (I beleive.)
Thanks.

Thanks for posting this Sheri. I’ve sent my e-mail and forwarded the request to friends.

Judge Walker announced today that cameras will be allowed in the courtroom. Hooray for transparency!

I just heard that. A little disappointed that it won’t be on TV. Guess it is time I get acquainted with You Tube.

I’m a little disappointed that it won’t be on TV, sure. However, the good thing is that the YouTube videos can go “viral” and be shared all over the place. The shallowness of the anti-equality position will be on display for all to see. As one of my friends put it, “Toto is about to pull back the curtain and expose the fraud.”
I like that analogy. And good point about YouTube will reach a much wider audience and be available much longer for people to view.

As we all unfortunately know, the Prop 8 supporters went to the US Supreme Court to block Judge Walker’s decision. Interestingly enough, during the public comment period 138,542 people said that the cameras should be there, and 32 said they should not. Yet, the cameras are not there because the 32 in question said that the only reason cameras were wanted was for “witness intimidation.” Interesting, no?
Anyway, Courage Campaign has a journalist there who is doing live-blogging … and apparently is quite a typist, because he’s got a verbatim transcript of testimony going. You can see it at http://www.prop8trialteracker.com.
Thanks so much for posting the link, Fiona64; I’m behind and didn’t realize that it was not going to be on YouTube. Wouldn’t have found the site without your link; however, a slight typo, it should be http://www.prop8trialtracker.com
